Hazardous Materials Awareness

Prerequisite:  Must be an active member of the Emergency Services

Course Description:  Emergency Response Team members at the awareness level are those persons who, in the course of their normal duties, could be the first on the scene of a hazardous materials emergency response.  This course stresses how responders can protect themselves, call for trained personnel, and secure the area.  Information is also provided on Transport Canada placarding, utilizing various resources like CANUTEC, and the use of the Emergency Response Guidebook.

This course meets the NFPA 472 Standard (2002) for Hazardous Materials and is accredited by the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC).

Certification:  Candidates will be issued a Certificate upon successful completion of a written and practical exam. 

Materials:  Must have internet access and a valid e-mail address. 

Emergency Response Guidebook – not supplied.

The Office of the Fire Commissioner is currently transitioning to a new application and delivery process of online courses.  The Hazmat Awareness course will commence the first Monday of every month.  Applications must be received by the Manitoba Emergency Services College by the 10th day of the month prior.  For example:  to start May 5, 2008 an application form must have been received by the College by April 10, 2008;  to start June 9, 2008 and application form must be received by the College by May 10, 2008 and so on.  Detailed course packages will be sent to the student upon receipt and approval of the application.

It is the responsibility of the student to register for the exam.  Exam dates and location are available in our course catalogue.
