Manitoba Fire Reporting Procedures

The Manitoba Fires Prevention and Emergency Response Act stipulates all Fire Departments, the Insurance Industry and Adjusters are to report all fire losses, to the Office of the Fire Commissioner in a prescribed format and in a timely manner.

Fire reports are based on the Canadian Coding Structure for Fire Statistics as agreed upon by the Canadian Council of Fire Marshals and Fire Commissioners.

  • Fire Departments
  • Within one week of occurrence
  • Prescribed forms or
  • Fire Department Management (FDM) System
  • Insurance Industry & Adjusters
  • Preliminary report 7 days following the month end in which the fire occurred.
  • Follow up completed on closure of each file detailing claims paid.
  • Prescribed form
  • Police Authorities
  • Arrangements differ from department to department depending on agreed procedures.
  • Written report
  • Fire Investigators
  • One month following their initial investigation as per Office policy.
  • Written report and
  • Prescribed forms

The Office of the Fire Commissioner is currently implementing the online version of the Fire Department Management System into fire departments throughout Manitoba.  The online system has the same look and feel as the current version used by the local departments.  The difference is that the reports can now be uploaded to the OFC via the internet.  As well, fire department reports submitted to the OFC are backed up centrally which alleviates the chances of data loss.
