What are the Most Common Situations that can cause Critical Incident Stress?

The events in an emergency service workers job that usually create the most significant critical incident stress reactions are: 1) Line of duty death; 2) Serious line of duty injury; 3) Suicide of a co-worker; 4) Multi-casualty incident; 5) Injury or death resulting from operational procedures; 6) Events involving children; 7) Victim is related or known; or 8) Mission failure.  Although these are typically the most powerful events that a worker may encounter, almost any incident has the potential to cause Critical Incident Stress (CIS) if that worker is vulnerable and the situation is “right”.
